Sea Fly Fishing – What you need to know
Sea fly fishing uses many of the skills and tolls of freshwater fishing. However, you need a more study rod, and ‘palming’ reels cannot be used. Due to the nature of the fish and the conditions you work in for saltwater fishing, sea fly fishing does use slightly different skill sets. While the basic casting and playing of the line is similar, you must use different tools to get the job done.
As salt is highly corrosive, the first difference is in the rod and the reel. You need a high quality reel that boasts powerful drag and good tension control, while being crafted of durable, corrosive resistant supplies. Be warned, a reel of this nature will cost you in excess of $500.00. The rod must also be made of non-corrosive material, but there is more flexibility in price for this component.
In addition to the rod and reel being different, the fly is also different. Sea fly fishing lures are heavier by nature, to withstand the more powerful currents and waves, as well as the jaws, of the fish that you are attempting to catch. As you can catch fish like tuna, trout lures simply will not do. Many sea fly fishing lures come in sizes #8 and #10.
When you set out to go sea fly fishing, you have the option of working from the shore or from a boat. Charter vessels will take you to your destinations, if you do not own your own sea worthy ship or boat. As you are dealing with much stronger forces of nature, you must use extra precautions. In the case of fishing for tuna and other large fish, the proper security ties must be in place on the ship, so you are not pulled into the water. In the case of offshore fishing expeditions, you will need to make certain that you plan well in advance, as these types of voyages tend to be filled up quickly, and are on a reservation basis.
Before you cast your first line, you need to make certain that you are aware of the local laws and have the proper licenses to fish. In some areas, the fees and penalties for fishing without a license on the ocean can be staggering, costing you up to thousands of dollars. If you go offshore, you need to also be aware of the country boundaries, especially if you are fishing along the border, such as between the United States and Canada. While you may have a license for Maine, that license will not be valid if you cross over to Canadian waters.
So long as you keep safety in mind, sea fly fishing is a sport with staggering rewards and challenge.
